A century in five dates

The history of the Palestine flag

From the Arab Revolt to the flag flown today, with the source for each date.

1916: the Arab Revolt

Where the design begins. The flag comes from the flag of the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, which Sharif Hussein was using by 1917 at the latest (Wikipedia, “Flag of Palestine”).

1964: the Palestine Liberation Organization

Adopted on 28 May 1964. The PLO took the flag as its own, with a specification set on 1 December 1964 (Wikipedia, “Flag of Palestine”).

1988: the State of Palestine

Declared on 15 November 1988. The PLO adopted the flag as the flag of the State of Palestine (Wikipedia, “Flag of Palestine”).

Since then

Flown widely. After the Palestinian Authority was set up in 1993, following the Oslo Accords, the flag became widely used on the ground, and since 2015 a Palestine Flag Day has been marked on 30 September (Wikipedia, “Flag of Palestine”).
